I can't bank on a three-year period at United - Amorim

Manchester United head coach

Ruben Amorim - seen receiving consolation following May's Europa League final defeat - notes he is satisfied by Sir Jim Ratcliffe's long-term backing but stressed that what lies ahead is unknown in football.

Manchester United head coach Amorim thinks it is important the investor went public with his long-term thoughts - but notes nothing is assured about the next day in soccer, let alone three years.

In an interview with a major publication last week, the co-owner mentioned it may need the manager a three-year period to create substantial change at the Theatre of Dreams.

Coming in a period when the manager's position has been facing examination following an extended sequence of unsatisfactory outcomes, the comments helped quell some of the immediate pressure.

But, speaking before the hundredth encounter with traditional foes the Reds at their home ground, Amorim underscored that tomorrow is difficult to forecast in the beautiful game.

"It's certainly beneficial to hear it but he tells me constantly, occasionally through communication following matches - but you know, I'm aware and Jim knows, that soccer doesn't work that way," he stated.

"The crucial element is the following fixture. Regardless of investors, you cannot manage the future in the sport."

Chief executive Omar Berrada has acknowledged it has needed significantly extended periods for Amorim to adjust to the top division after his transfer from Sporting Lisbon in November than anyone imagined.

The Red Devils have secured 10 successes in 34 top-flight fixtures during Amorim's tenure. They are yet to win two league games in a row and haven't finished a fixture schedule this season better than ninth place.

The worrying figures are stretching belief in Amorim among the United fanbase heading into a run of games their team has struggled during for the last couple of years.

Amorim said he doesn't sense the doubt inside the club at the team's practice complex and is insistent nothing equals the expectation he applies to his players - and to some extent, he would prefer Sir Jim to refrain from seeking to create tranquility because he is concerned about the effect it might produce on the team.

"It's not just an item of conversation, I feel it daily," he remarked. "It's certainly beneficial to listen to it because it benefits our followers to comprehend the administration realize it needs a period.

"Yet concurrently, I dislike it because it generates a sense that we possess time to solve problems. I don't wish for that impression in our team.

"The expectation I apply to the squad or to myself is significantly greater [than that from outside]. In football, particularly at major teams, you need to prove your worth every matchday."
