King Charles Officially Removes Andrew of HRH Style and Princely Dignity

In a definitive action, the reigning monarch has officially removed Andrew Mountbatten Windsor of his HRH style and his title of prince.

These alterations were formalized by publishing letters patent under the Great Seal of the Realm, which were published in the UK's official public record.

The official notice stated: “The king has been graciously inclined by royal instruments under the Great Seal dated 3 November 2025 to declare that Andrew Mountbatten Windsor shall cease to be entitled to possess the style, title or attribute of ‘HRH’ and the titular dignity of ‘Prince’.”

Another record confirmed the stripping of the Duke of York from the peerage list, with immediate effect.

It read: “The king has been pleased to direct by warrant under his signature dated 30 October 2025 to instruct his secretary of state to cause the titleholder to be removed from the roll of the peerage.”

Background of the Decision

This decision comes after increasing controversy over Andrew's connections to convicted child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, exacerbated by the posthumous publication of Virginia Giuffre's memoir.

The author alleged that she was sexually abused by the former prince after being brought by Jeffrey Epstein, allegations that Mountbatten Windsor has always strenuously denied.

Mechanism of Removing Titles

Charles utilized his monarchical powers—recognized authorities held by the sovereign—following consultation with government advisers, instead of through parliamentary means.

Letters patent and royal warrants are tools of this prerogative, used to bestow or remove titles and honors.

Because the HRH style is granted by such documents, it can be revoked through the same instrument.

Further Actions and Support

Following the palace statement, the lord chancellor was directed to draft the necessary documents for the removal of titles.

The decision also involves Andrew relinquishing his tenancy on his Windsor residence, a 30-room royal property where he has lived for twenty years.

The government endorsed the king's decision.

Retained Honor

In spite of the loss of titles, it was announced that Mountbatten Windsor will retain his South Atlantic medal, awarded for his service as a Sea King helicopter co-pilot during the Falklands War.
