A person, who was later arrested for supposedly assaulting police officers with a deli product, interacts with Border Patrol and government officials.

A US immigration agent has declared in court he could sense through his ballistic vest the collision of a deli item hurled at him by a capital city activist, who has faced court proceedings for assault.

Federal border agent Gregory Lairmore testified to the court panel the food item "burst all over him" and he "could smell the vegetables and mustard" on his uniform.

Both legal teams disputes that the accused, thirty-seven, did in fact throw obscenities and a made-to-order snack at law enforcement deployed by the former president to monitor the Washington DC in the summer month.

The occurrence was captured on video and spread across the internet, making the defendant a figure of protest in the federal district to the administration.

State lawyers originally tried to secure felony charges against the accused, but a legal panel refused to charge him.

The administration's assignment of military personnel to the federal district this season generated outrage from some of the local inhabitants, who viewed it as a partisan deployment of the troops.

According to legal filings, Mr Dunn came near a group of officers at about late evening on 10 August, calling them "authoritarians" and yelling: "Why are you here? I don't want you in my city!"

The trial witnessed a reenactment from the agent on the court date as he took the stand against Mr Dunn.

"I detected it through my protective gear," he said of the sandwich's impact, mentioning that an aromatic fragment remained from his communication device and mustard marked his uniform.

Mr Dunn's legal counsel, his legal representative, argued in her opening statement that hurling the sandwich was a "non-threatening act that did not, could not, cause injury".

But government attorney John Parron maintained Mr Dunn must be considered responsible.

"Regardless of identity, you cannot simply hurling objects at people because you're mad," Mr Parron stated.

After the alleged assault came to light, the accused was terminated from his position as a legal assistant in the federal legal agency.
